He has applied reason, precedent and compassion to the solution of the wide range of problems that come to the federal courts. A judge of the United States Court of Appeals, Fifth Circuit (Southeastern and Southwestern states) since 1966, he is respected as the author of numerous judicial opinions characterized by thoughtful analysis, careful scholarship, social awareness and literate style. Before that he was an outstanding practicing lawyer and participant in national and Dallas organizations dealing with significant and sensitive questions. To this intellectual and literate Federal Judge, this energetic and dedicated community leader, we are pleased to grant the degree of Doctor of Laws, honoris causa.
